039 - Retouching

Updated: Dec 27, 2024

For me retouching falls into three levels:

01 - Basic Retouching

This includes cropping, exposure and colour correction, removing dust, dirt, blemishes and other stray artifacts that are distractions. The images below show a before-and-after example of basic retouching.

02 - Additional Retouching

This involves removing bigger distractions, fixing eyes and expressions, and addressing small parts of the image that don’t look right. Often, these are elements of the image that bother the client.

In the first example I was asked to remove the glasses hanging from his sweater. In the second example, I moved the couple on the right closer to the family and I adjusted the mother's hand.

Both these examples required more effort than basic retouching but were still relatively simple to complete.

The couple on the right are separated from the rest of the family. The mothers hand is blurry.

I moved the couple over and I was able to fix the mother's hand.

03 - More Difficult Retouching

This typically includes switching backgrounds or handling other special requests.

In this example, I replaced the background, which dramatically changed the photo. It’s important to ensure the lighting and shadows remain consistent and that the final look aligns with the clients preferences.

I substituted the new background.

What is included in my photo packages?

Basic Retouching: Always included.

Additional Retouching: Included if it can be done quickly.

More Difficult Retouching: Decided on a case-by-case basis.
