What is a lifestyle photographer? Part 1

Part 1

I am a Kingston based photographer. I call myself a lifestyle photographer. But what is a lifestyle photographer?

A lifestyle photographer photographs people. Who they are, their accomplishments, their goals, and their relationships.

Lifestyle photography is a type of photography where the aim is to capture important events and accomplishments in peoples lives. The primary goal of these photos is to tell something about the subject. A lifestyle photographer draws from many disciplines of photography such as fitness photography, portrait photography, maternity photography, family photography, and engagement and wedding photography. In addition I cover sports photography, fashion photography, commercial photography, even street photography.

Everyone has a story, something interesting happening in their lives. My job is to capture that. I photograph important occasions, as well as everyday events. I photograph people with their families and partners. I photograph activities. Rather than take photographs that are posed and awkward I photograph what is important in your life. I am always on the lookout for special moments to capture.

Lifestyle photography covers a lot of ground.

Set 1 -Fitness photography and portrait photography

Sometimes I want to recognize achievements or milestones

1)Fitness photography. Fitness competitors work really hard to get in shape and to attain the physique they are after. That is certainly the case with Alicia. Fitness is a big part of her life. This photograph is from our first session together. She had just gotten off the stage only a few hours earlier after competing in the figure category of the Ontario Physique Association Provincials. She was still pretty revved up and excited and I think her energy shows. Since then I have photographed her many more times. She always displays that dedication and enthusiasm.

2)Portrait photography. My son in law Nick is apprenticing to become an electrician. On this particular day I caught him just after he came home from work. He was still covered in dirt and dust and sweat. Learning a trade is a big commitment and a big step forward. This photo is very simpIe yet it represents an important part of his life.

Sometimes I focus on who you are and what you do

3)Portrait photography. Chris is a saxaphone player. He was part of a small group in the recording studio that day. I photographed each of the musicians between sets.

4)Portrait photography. I like it when I can work with clients over an extended period of time. Trixtan is a Calgary based entertainer. He and I had worked together many times. He does stage shows and magic acts. He performs at large events and private functions. Here he is as a clown. When Trixtan is performing the look of excitement on his face is real. There is no doubt he enjoys what he does.

5)Portrait photography. As I said everyone has an interesting story to share. One photograph is never going to say everything. But it can give us a clue. Trev and Esther are both Calgary based musicians. I have photographed them 5 or 6 times now over several years. Each shoot is diiferent. They are always creative and fun to work with.

And of course I cover couples photography

6)Sometimes it is difficult to fit certain photographic topics into simple categories. For example is this a fitness photo or a couples photo. Perhaps it doesn’t matter. We were in the middle of a fitness photo session with Ashleigh and Kyle. Kyle had competed the day prior in mens bodybuilding at the OPA Provincial Championships. Ashleigh is also a fitness competitor. In addition to being husband and wife they are training partners. For a second Ashleigh put her arms around her husband Kyle. At that moment the shot became a couples shot more than a fitness shot.

I am a Kingston based lifestyle photographer. I cover all of southern and eastern Ontario. Let me tell your story.
