Planning for Spontaneity

I am sometimes hired to photograph couples. I have a certain amount of time to get some great shots. But I found that often the best shots are somewhat spontaneous.

I have attached a few shots that I think turned out really well. All of these shots are spontaneous. That is I gave the absolute minimum direction to the couples. But these shots just didn’t just happen by luck. There was planning involved.

But how do I plan for spontaneity?

This is difficult. By its very nature spontaneity just happens. I often tell my clients that I want them to pose without looking like they are posing. This usually causes some confusion. So I help them. I start off with some really simple poses. This might be move closer together, turn one way or turn the other, hands up or hands down. I want to get them moving. I give the couple just enough direction to get them started and then I back off. I will offer some advice from time to time but only to keep them on track. As a photographer I set the stage but I don’t write the script.

As the couple starts to relax they will pay more attention to each other and less to me. Ideally they will forget I am even there. But this is where I had better be ready. The perfect expression and perfect pose might only last for a second. I do not want to miss it!

Some couples need a lot of direction and other need none whatsoever. The trick is to know the difference.

I am a Kingston based lifestyle photographer. I cover all of southern and eastern Ontario. Let me tell your story.

1) I'm extremely happy with the finished photos! I couldn't have even expected them to look that amazing! You just can't put a price on work like that! And even so, the investment was well worth it! I'll be booking round two in the near future  /react-text   react-text: 188   /react-text
