Karen Samuels - First Time Fitness Competitor

One thing I enjoy about photography is the people I meet. In March I got together with Karen Samuels for a photosession. She had just completed her first fitness competition the day before on Mar 17.

She has an incredible story.

In Karen’s own words:

“I am extremely happy with my results as a first-time competitor.

I’m definitely going to compete again.

I started this journey (my ftness journey) last year as a promise to my Gran that I would see this goal to the end, no matter what. She has since passed, but she is with me daily.

I started out at 215lbs. By show day, I was 152lbs and very lean.

It was by no means easy — I cried, and had loads of self-doubt.

I have a great trainer, Alicia Bell, who saw something in me that I had never seen before. I must also acknowledge Fedel Clarke and Georgina D’Abreo, because getting me to loosen up took serious work.

I began to fall in love with myself for the first time. I went from being invisible to visible once I began to truly trust the process.

I also surrounded myself with people who have experience competing who provided me with support, to go along with support from my friends and family.

Because I was training twice a day, I had longer work days to fit everything in, and was feeling rundown and tired. My father was diagnosed with 11% kidney function last year, and my mother is a stroke survivor, so my life also included many medical appointments for them.

Because of my drive and the support of my team, I never lost focus on myself and my goals.

I had a lump removed from my right breast on March 22, which I had delayed until after the competition. I am a breast cancer survivor.

I am definitely getting used to my new body. And I’m loving it.

My Gran would always say, “Nothing before it’s time.”

It’s my time now.”
